Who is Sprout Capital?

Sprout Capital Investments is a company that specializes in the procurement of raw maize from smallholder farmers, transporters and traders, cleaning, drying, fumigating and storing same as standardized maize ready for the market. The company has got plans to diversify her business to include the milling of flour for human consumption as well as animal feeds manufacturing.

Do you own corn fields?

No, we don’t. What we majorly own are grain cleaning, drying and storage facilities with a capacity to dry about 10 mt/hr, clean 30 mt/hr, and store 12,600 mt at any one time for all smallholder farmers.
The company chose to build their facilities outside Kampala, which is closer to the smallholder farmers, so that the farmers may be able to benefit directly from the prices offered by the company, without having to go through middlemen. Being close to farmers would also enable Sprout provide support and additional services to the farming community. Secondly, the company would plan to offer a finished product (dry and clean grain with the right moisture content) to Kampala City, which forms the greater part of the market for maize grains in Uganda, as well as to the region – Kenya, TZ, Rwanda, South Sudan, etc.

Do you sell maize flour?

We are in the business of buying grains from farmers, cleaning drying, fumigating and storing them ready for the market. This grain is then sold to the open market. Some of the buyers usually come on the basis of contracts, the contracts of which usually cover volume of the grains being needed by the buyer. However, many of the buyers are walk-in buyers who include traders, millers, middlemen, institutions like schools and hospitals, and sometimes the smallholder farmers themselves.
